Report of the Event

                  It’s our immense pleasure to report you the first of its kind “Master Class” on the management of Chronic Venous Diseases jointly organised by Venous Association of India & Department of Surgery, PDUMC, Rajkot and Rajkot Surgeons Association. It was a first ever international event on venous diseases in Gujarat and Rajkot is privileged to be the venue. The whole event was organized and managed by Department of Surgery, P. D. U. Medical College, Rajkot and all teaching staff and residents have attended & participated in the event.
 

                  The diseases of veins form an important part of surgical practice. Varicose veins, venous ulcers & deep vein thrombosis are few examples which are faced in day to day practice. Advances in imaging technology, improved understanding of venous anatomy and hemodynamics has revolutionized the treatment of venous diseases.


                  It was a unique opportunity for General Surgeons, Vascular Surgeons and students to learn about the venous system and basic skills & recent advances in management of Chronic Venous Diseases.


                  On 14-08-2010 Prof. Francois Ulh (France), Dr. Rene Mellrete (France) and Dr. Ted King (USA) have taken theory aspect of Venous Anatomy, Physiology and various modalities of treatment options depending on the severity of disease. The event was organized at the Medical Education Unit, P. D. U. Medical College, Rajkot. Dr. Pinjala Ramakrishnan (President VAI), Dr. Madhuri Gore (Mumbai), Dr. Harinder Bedi (Ludhiana), Dr. Raul Jindal (Chandigadh), Dr. Roy Vargese (Kerala), Dr. Malay Patel (Ahmedabad), Dr. Vijay Thakore (Vadodara) and many prominent vascular surgeons from India and Gujarat have actively participated in the discussion. Dr. Gulab Patel (Surat), Dr. Bipin Ambasana (Jamanagar), Dr. Samir Shah (Bhavanagar) and Dr. Vasant Valu (Ahmedabad) any many more teaching faculties from various medical colleges of the Gujarat State attended masterclass with their post graduate students.


                  A live Operative Work shop was arranged on 15-08-2010 at Auditorium, Cancer Hospital, Rajkot from 9.00 AM to 5.00 PM. Prof. Francois Ulh (France), Dr. Rene (France) and Dr. Tade King (USA) have demonstrated various conventional & advanced surgical procedures for varicose veins and chronic venous disease (CVD). They have also demonstrated Doppler study for CVD. Total 10 patients were operated and a “Hands on training” on Doppler study, Tumescent Anasthesia and Surgery was given. The whole event was well appreciated by all participants.


                  As a privilege to the Under Graduate Students special lectures were proposed by the chairman of the Masterclass and endorsed by the Dean P. D. U. Medical College. The first lecture composed of basic anatomical and physiological knowledge of venous system. Prof. Francois Ulh highlighted on role of Doppler and recent advances in the management of chronic venous diseases. Being a master of respective subjects, Dr. Rene gave lecture on foam sclerotherpy and Dr. Ted King delivered lecture on Lasers. 160 students of 3rd MBBS have attended the lecture and actively participated in the discussion and question answer session.


                  Dr. P. D. Viththalani (Additional Director, Medical Education) and Dr. Pramod Kumar (Dean, PDUMC) graced the function and acknowledged the efforts of organizing team.


                  A special lecture of one hour was arranged on 13-08-2010 at P. D. U. Medical College for Nurses. The lecture composed of a film on virtual travel in the veins, methods of ulcer dressing and many interesting aspects relevant to the nurses. It was arranged on 13-08-2010 at lecture hall P. D. U. Medical College, Rajkot and total 150 staff nurses from P.D. U. Hospital, Wockhardt Hospital, Dhakan Hospital and Nursing Students and teachers from Nursing College Rajkot and Anand Nursing College attended it. It was well appreciated by all participants.


                  The Masterclass 2010 on Chronic Venous Disease was organized under chairmanship of Dr. Jatin G. Bhatt, Professor and Head, Department of Surgery, PDUMC, Rajkot and Dr. D. B. Dekiwadia, Part-time Assistant Professor of Cardio-vascular Surgery, Department of Surgery, PDUMC, Rajkot worked as an Organising Secretary, under Patronage of Dr. Pramod Kumar, Dean, PDUMC, Rajkot.
